Minnesota is known for our high quality K-12 education. This did not happen by accident, however- and we cannot take it for granted.
I strongly believe that we need to keep education within our local control. That is why I oppose any effort to nationalize Minnesota's education system. Our parents, teachers, and school board members know what is best for our students in this community.
We need to create a jobs-climate that welcomes and encourages businesses to build and grow in Minnesota. And while government does not create jobs, it's leaders can help to encourage their creation.
I believe that a world-class education is also important to attracting and maintaining jobs. One factor companies look for when expanding is a highly trained and educated workforce. By investing in job skills training programs, we can ensure the workforce matches the jobs that are available.
I believe Minnesota can be a leader in job creation, retention and middle-class expansion in the coming decades. The way to that is not by more government, but by providing the environment for job creation.
TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC SAFETY
A well cared for road network is vital for a healthy, growing economy, and well-maintained roads are essential for the safety of Minnesota families.
Specifically, I will fight to make sure Highway 10 is a top priority. We need to bring it up to date with our traffic needs, and help reduce accidents and fatalities. We must prioritize state spending so the current projects being planned may begin as soon as possible. This community is a great place to live and work- and its important that those traveling through the area on Highway 10 are not deterred by negative experiences with traffic congestion, or poorly maintained roadways. We have much to gain by bringing the roads here up to standard.
THE SECOND AMENDMENT
I am a strong supporter of our Second Amendment rights - the NRA gave me the highest ranking a non-incumbent can receive (AQ). I believe that we, the people, have the right to keep and bear arms, the right to protect and defend our homes and families, and I will work to ensure that this right shall not be infringed.
BUDGET & TAXES
The hardworking taxpayers of Minnesota have been through a lot over the past two years. The Democrat-controlled state government raised taxes by over $2 billion and state spending by over $4 billion.
I will fight for increased property tax relief, lowering income taxes, and reduction in the complexity of the tax code. Instead of spending nearly $90 million -of your money- on projects like a new building for legislatures, I will work to ensure state spending reflects the priorities of this district, including education and transportation. We need to return fiscal responsibility to St. Paul.
FAMILY & LIFE
Family is the foundation of our society. The only way to have a healthy community is to have healthy families. I believe we need to foster a community where family is honored. That is why I will fight for the rights of parents and the protection of traditional family values.
Family is also a place where life begins – at conception. I believe we need to honor the sanctity of life, for without the right to life, all other rights are meaningless.
Team Whelan recently introduced a new hash-tag for our campaign: #MillennialTakeBack. This is a call to the newest generation of voters – the 18-34 year-olds. Specifically I hope to encourage others in our generation (and every generation) that we can make a difference if we engage in the community, educate ourselves, and shed the apathy that seems so rampant. It is time to wake up and participate, before we lose the right to do so.
This does not mean it will be easy. Making a lasting difference takes hard work.
As the great men and women throughout history have shown us, in order to make true reforms, diligence is required. I will work hard for our district, for every generation, to make this state a better place today, and a better place for the generations to follow.
